(Gananoque, ON – July 14, 2024) Grace United Church in Gananoque was bursting with Pride as they held their second ever service dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community and their families.
“The colours of the rainbow signify love – love of family, love of friends, love of community,” said Reverend Takouhi Demirdjian-Petro of Grace United. “And for those who do not have these things, know that we love you and welcome you.”
With these words, she used the Christ Candle to light the rainbow-coloured candles on the altar – red for life, range for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for harmony/serenity, and violet for spirit. Her spiritual focus for the day was Matthew 5:14-16, “And you, beloved, are the light of the world…”
About 65 people came from throughout the area to participate in the special service. Special soloist B Heaslip performed two songs for the occasion – “The Greatest Love of All” and “Shine”.
Reverend Takouhi spoke on the importance of loving all people in society, of accepting everyone as family. She emphasized the message of the Beatitudes and asked everyone to consider intentional living.
“People have spoken out against this second annual pride service being held in this sanctuary, but they forget – the sanctuary does not belong to the church, it belongs to God.”
Through song and spoken word the congregation was encouraged to be their true selves and to reach out to others. A special surprise during the service was the introduction to the fold of a new infant.
Following the service, participants were invited to gather in the basement for pie, lemonade and fellowship.
“This is a day to celebrate the true colours of all individuals among us,” said Reverend Takouhi. “Let yours shine through.”
Pride celebrations in Gananoque are planned to resume from September 26-29.
