RibFest triumphs despite wild weather

(Gananoque, ON July 1, 2024) The Gananoque Rotary and Lions Clubs teamed up once again for a successful RibFest held in the sports fields at the Lou Jeffries Recreation Centre. The four-day event included entertainment for all ages, vendors, and of course, the ribs. The four ribbers were Jack the Ribber, Route 55 BBQ, Silver Bullet BBQ, and Smoke House Bandits, and other food vendors were also available on-site.

“The smallest community to host Ribfest in Canada welcomes over 19,000 visitors every year,” says the website at www.1000islandsfamilyribfest.ca/ . “The Rotary & Lions Clubs of Gananoque give 100 percent of proceeds back to the community. They support charities, families and students and lead projects that positively change Gananoque and the 1000 Islands area. 1000 Islands Family Ribfest is a safe and clean event that everyone can enjoy.”

A favourite part of Ribfest is always the rubber duckie drop. Tickets are sold on the 2,500 rubber duckies and then the duckies themselves are dropped from helicopters provided by Kouris Kopters. Six children are selected to pick the winning ducks out of the pool. There were three prize packages each consisting of $900 worth of gift certificates from local businesses. This year’s winners were first prize – Flying High (Kouri’s Kopters, Shopper’s Drug Mart, Gan Inn, Thousand Islands Playhouse, and Riva, Ivy and Maverick’s Restaurants) to Cal French of Gananoque;  second prize – 1,000 Islands Adventure (Treetop Trekking, Half Day Kayaking, a tent from Canadian Tire, Frontenac Hockey, Gan Inn and Maverick’s Restaurant) to Andre D’Aout of Ivy Le, and third prize – 1,000 Islands Experience ( City Cruises, Duty Free Basket, Frontenac Hockey, Thousand Islands Playhouse, Gan Inn, Ivy Restaurant and Woodview Inn) to Faye Gollogly of Toronto.

“The money from the rubber ducky drop goes to the RibFest for 2024,” said Town Crier Brian Mabee. “The Lions and Rotary Clubs of Gananoque work cooperatively on many projects in Gananoque. The RibFest is a fundraiser that helps support these efforts.”

The violent weather on the Saturday closed the event down for several hours, but by Sunday things were back up and running. On Canada Day, the Food Bank held a special free pancake breakfast featuring real maple syrup donated by local producers. This was to say thank you to the community for all that they have done to help them over the year. They are always grateful any and all donations.
