Faces in he Crowd

by Lorraine Payette, written December 7, 2013

(GANANOQUE, ON) The early snow lent a perfect backdrop on November 30 as Gananoque held its annual Santa Claus parade down King Street East. Six blocks of carollers, floats, bands and marchers lit up the night, as hundreds of people gathered to cheer them on. Free hot chocolate was handed out to by-standers, and Santa and two of his reindeer took time after the parade to meet with local children. This was on the heels of a successful teddy bear toss held by the Gananoque Jr. B Islanders, in partnership with the Gananoque BIA and Big Bass Challenge. A first annual event, it was designed to benefit many local children. – to read more>

“When in danger or in doubt
Run in circles, scream and shout…”
– Leslie Simpson, ca. 1970

Freedom, yes, but probably not in the way you’re thinking. If life were that easy, I would never have thought to try a new column.

I woke up this morning with the hymn, “Enter, Rejoice and Come In!” clanging insistently in my head. We all get ear worms, but not that one, and especially not on first waking up. However, it felt like someone was trying to tell me something, and I’m trying to learn to listen. – to read more>

by Susan Healey, Communications Coordinator, Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, November 26, 2013

(Leeds, Grenville and Lanark) Another Canadian winter is here! Frostbite and hypothermia are real potential dangers especially for individuals who are out in the elements for long periods of time; those who have a decreased sensation in their extremities; and children.

Frostbite is the freezing of skin and the layers of tissue underneath the skin. It usually occurs when temperatures drop below -4 degrees C. Frostbite is hard to feel, so when enjoying the outdoors make sure to check for white or grey spots on skin or areas that have lost feeling. Sometimes tingling or pain can be a warning sign of frostbite. Frostbite usually occurs in hands, feet, nose and ears. – to read more>

For the love of the game, playing on a backyard pond

For the love of the game, one timer and the crowd goes wild
For the love of the game
