“They can play the bugle call like you’ve never heard before
Sounds so natural that you’ll wanna go to war
That’s just the best band in the land …”
– Alexander’s Rag Time Band

(ROCKPORT, ONTARIO) Hot cha! Grease his palm with silver, and the bull will sleep all night while you and your gal slip into the speakeasy for a taste of bathtub gin and some smokin’ hot blues. But wake him up, and it’s twenty-three skidoo!

During the 1st Annual Rockport Prohibition Days, August 16-18, all the gangsters and molls, flappers and eggs, sheiks and shebas came out to indulge. Even the little guys brought their baby dolls along for a taste of the action. – to read more>

Gananoque Man and His Mother Continue to Be Harassed Under Pigeon/Geese By-law

by Lorraine Payette, written August 12, 2013

(GANANOQUE, ONTARIO) John Higgins of Gananoque is completely confused about the workings of Council, By-Law Enforcement and amendments to By-Law No. 2011-74, also known as the “Pigeon/Geese By-Law”. And well he might be.

Higgins lives on River Street in Gananoque with Mary Elizabeth Higgins, his 85-year-old mother. One of their simple joys in life is to watch the small songbirds that gather in their beautifully landscaped yard to partake of the seeds offered by their two tiny birdfeeders, both fastened to a single pole. And they are rewarded by most of the regular callers at such facilities – sparrows, wrens, chickadees, canaries, blue jays, and occasional exotic looking cardinals and downy woodpeckers. He has put fencing along the waterfront behind his property to prevent water birds from coming ashore there and fowling the grounds. – to read more>

by Lorraine Payette, written August 15, 2013

(GANANOQUE, ONTARIO) Winter and early spring of 1813 were cold and miserable. The War of 1812 was on, and troops mustered all along the St. Lawrence to defend the Canadas from American invasion. And among those troops were the 104th Regiment of Foot from New Brunswick. – to read more>

(GANANOQUE, ONTARIO) Marie-Louise Faucon isn’t your usual run of the mill postal employee. In Lovely, Ontario, in 1968, she has developed a rare and wonderful gift. Just by holding the letters in her care up to her heart, smelling their perfume and letting their very essence overtake her, she knows everything there is to know about the people who write them and those for whom they are intended. And she is more than willing to share her amazing insights with all of us if we will but sit and listen. After all, she is “The (Post) Mistress”, and the play by Tomson Highway will be opening at the Firehall Theatre in Gananoque on August 16. – to read more>
