(Gananoque, ON) The victims of the tragic Bell Tower Mall fire are learning just how amazing the townspeople of Gananoque really are.

On April 17 a fire broke out in the complex, killing one person and leaving 11 others homeless. Although a person has been charged in the incident, that’s a far cry from solving the problem for those who now find themselves with nothing.

“We’re accepting useful donations for the fire victims,” said Tara Berry of Overstocks at 122 King Street East in the town. “We’ve opened up a bank account for them. There are six families with no place at all to go. They need everything.” – to read more>

Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark used those words in responding to today’s announcement that the provincial government is providing $2 million to ensure an intake of students at Kemptville College this fall for the 2014-15 academic year.

“Since the closure was announced on March 12, my message to the Premier and the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities was that we needed that new group of students coming in this September – we couldn’t allow the lights to go out,” said Clark, who thanked Minister Duguid for working with him and the community to make that happen. – to read more>

(Inverary, ON) Sheba’s Haven in Inverary, Ontario, knows perhaps better than anyone else the sweet pain and sorrow of losing a loving, lifelong non-human companion. Since its humble beginning in 2000, many dogs have passed through its gates to find love and care as they spend their last weeks, months or sometimes years living in dignity at this one of a kind palliative care facility.

A small palliative care facility for dogs at 1830 Sunbury Road in Inverary, this registered charity looks after about 10 dogs at a time on a three-acre lot. There is plenty of room for them to get out and play, hunt for interesting things in the grass, or just bask in the sun. They receive the best in veterinary care, special diets, and the use of holistic and other natural treatments to guarantee that their remaining time is as comfortable and rewarding as possible. – to read more>

Benson Students Brush Up on the Importance of a Healthy Smile

CARDINAL, ON — An important message about oral health was delivered to students at Benson Public School today in a fun, interactive way. Steve Clark, MPP Leeds-Grenville, joined local dentists, Dr. Kim Hansen and Dr. Lance McIntosh, and Timmy the Tooth to highlight the importance of a healthy smile during a Brush-a-mania event.

April is Oral Health Month, and the Ontario Dental Association (ODA) and dentists across Ontario embark on public education campaigns to ensure all Ontarians attain good oral health. One of those campaigns is Brush-a-mania, a province-wide event for children and youth led by local dentists. Students are challenged to brush their teeth regularly over the next month and demonstrate their brushing techniques through the highlight of the event – the “Brush-off”. Oral health is integral to overall health and Brush-a-mania aims to encourage good oral health habits in children that will help them throughout life.

Today’s event was a first for MPP Clark. “The importance of a healthy smile is something we can’t over-emphasize to children and youth.” said MPP Clark. “We all need to encourage children from a young age to look after their teeth, and I was happy to deliver this message today alongside Drs. Hansen and McIntosh.”

Dr. Hansen, an ODA Board member, was enthusiastic about the event. “Reaching out to children and getting them excited about a healthy smile is a rewarding part of my job and a key part of my role in our community,” said Dr. Hansen. His comments were echoed by Dr. McIntosh, President of the Brockville Dental Association, who added, “I think it’s important that children and youth are taught the importance of brushing, flossing and a nutritious diet. Seeing all of those healthy smiles today reminds me of how, as dentists, we have a duty to instill good oral health habits at an early age.”

This Oral Health Month, the ODA wants to reinforce the message that dentists are the oral health-care experts and the best resource patients have for information on achieving a healthy smile.

Riverbank Productions presents a concert-style presentation of the classic musical “South Pacific” this afternoon, Sunday, April 6 at 2:30 pm. Running at the Firehall Theatre, the show was a hit on Broadway in 1949, then made into a movie in 1958 starting Mitzi Gaynor and Rosanno Brazzi.

Set on a U.S. Navy base during the second world war, “South Pacific” centres around the nurses and sailors on the base, telling two very different love stores with one common theme – can people truly overcome their inbred prejudices and accept others for who they really are? – to read more>

Great Lakes Seaway Trail Presents 2013 Hoffman Challenge Quilts at the Thousand Islands Art Center Galleries

The collection features quilted works of all styles and sizes in elegant peacock, aqua and gold colors and patterns.

(Gananoque, ON) On April 1st, 2014, at approximately 8:30 a.m., the Gananoque Police Service received information that a young person made a threat to cause death and/or bodily harm to two students at TR Leger School in Gananoque.

TR Leger was immediately placed on a “hold and secure” status in accordance with school protocol. Hold and secure status means that all exterior doors are locked and students were locked in the classroom with their teacher, but classes continued. The Gananoque Intermediate Secondary School was also put into hold and secure status as a precaution. – to read more>

The Gananoque Police Service is warning residents about fraudulent communications that are being received through email regarding the Canada Revenue Agency.

The ongoing scam involves false emails claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Reports have been received from residents who have received emails appearing to be from the CRA stating they are owed a refund or that they are required to immediately pay, back taxes to the CRA. – to read more>

How often do you think about water when you turn on a tap? Flush a toilet? Take a bath? Water your lawn?

Chances are, you don’t, yet there are many people out there who don’t have access to readily available, potable water, let alone find it flowing freely from their taps.
