Brian Phillips Presents Athens History in Pictures

by Lorraine Payette, written August 10, 2013

(ATHENS, ONTARIO) The Athens Historical Society was delighted to host an evening with historian Brian Phillips as they celebrated the unveiling of their new heritage sign located in front of the Joshua Bates Centre at 1 Main Street West in the village on August 8.

The presentation, entitled “Athens: A History in Pictures”, showcased an elaborate collection of photographs and other memorabilia from the community’s past, all punctuated with Phillips’ dazzling running commentary. His natural wit and sense of humour help to bring not only the historical material alive, but also generate interest in the process itself. – to read more>

(GANANOQUE, ONTARIO) The air begins to settle as onlookers shift to find a more comfortable position in chairs or on benches. Some close their eyes. And then the magic unfolds, and they become transformed.

Against the sounds of nature herself, a low music begins to rise, weaving itself into the space around them, building in intensity until it mingles with the very soul and takes flight, bearing the listener into strange new worlds of beauty and understanding never experienced before. – to read more>

Sheba’s Haven Rescue Reaching out to Dogs in Need of Palliative Care

by Lorraine Payette, written March 15, 2012, updated December 1, 2012

(INVERARY, ONTARIO) It’s a dog’s life. For some, this means comfort and luxury until passing away quietly in one’s sleep and never knowing the difference. For others, the experience is far different, starting in misery and going downhill from there.

And then there’s the worst tragedy of all. Some are loved and pampered while they remain young and healthy, but as soon as something goes wrong, they find themselves abandoned by a roadside, not knowing where they are or where they can find help. They may wander for days, no longer certain who can be trusted and unsure as to why this was done to them when they had been faithful companions for so many years. – to read more>
