Always stop for the bus and never pass when the lights are flashing – young lives depend on it. supplied by L&A OPP

(Lenox and Addington, ON – August 26, 2023)

Officers of the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are asking that we all pay close attention to the fact that kids are going back to school, and we need to be careful to help keep them safe.

“During this back-to-school season, we can expect more traffic, busses, and children on the roads during their rush-hour commutes,” said Provincial Constable David Yome, Community Safety/Media Relations Officer. “As students return to the classroom, the OPP reminds motorists of the importance of sharing our roadways responsibly.”

Have a Blast with Nature Camp at Landon Bay

Originally written April 29, 2018

When we think of summer holidays, fondest childhood memories often centre on getting a chance to be in the great outdoors with other kids, playing and hiking and having campfires and doing all the great things that come from summer camp.  The Frontenac Arch Biosphere Nature Camp sessions at Landon Bay give modern children the chance to share in that experience while picking up some great educational features along the way.  Operated by volunteers with a mandate (the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Foundation and its predecessor The Barbara Heck Foundation), the Nature Camp will be celebrating its 15th season.

“We are very proud of our camp as it allows kids to discover and connect with nature, a skill that is very much lacking in today’s youth,” said Dion Running, teacher at Thousand Islands Elementary School.  “I volunteer with John Macleod to run the Nature Camp at Landon Bay.  We want to share the exciting news that the camps are expanding and not just shifting as Parks Canada is currently re-developing Landon Bay – a re-development that the Nature Camp will be involved in.” Continue reading

1,000 Islands Writers Festival fills Gananoque with all kinds of readers and writers

(Gananoque, ON)  Once upon a time there was a little town in southeastern Ontario called Gananoque.  One beautiful day, a tiny seed of an idea was planted in the minds of some literary minded folks.  Before too long, that seed sprouted, took root and grew into the 1,000 Islands Writers Festival.

(Gananoque, ON) Wendy Yaxley Aitkin is small but mighty, just like the deer tick she is trying to eradicate from the planet. A chronic Lyme Disease sufferer, she knows just how powerful something as tiny as the period at the end of this sentence or the dot over an “i” can truly be.

“(We need to do) anything we can do to wake people up,” she said. “Ticks are small and they will take away your life, if you are not educated.” – to read more>

“Oui! Care!” Now and Forever

Oui! Care! Light a candle in the darkness

written by Lorraine Payette, January 20, 2015

(Gananoque, ON) News reached me today that yet another young person decided the world was too difficult a place, life too trying to continue on, so she stepped off of an overpass and plunged to the concrete below. Amazingly, she landed between two transports on the highway and was not killed, but she has been hospitalized and all that know her (and many who don’t) are shocked and horrified. – to read more>

Local Agencies weigh in on “FAT TALK”

Girls Inc. – Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit – October 10, 2013

(LEEDS-GENVILLE, ON) – October 20th – 26th is Fat Talk Free Week. You are invited to take the challenge to end “fat talk” by thinking twice about using statements that are damaging to self-esteem and body image. “Fat talk” isn’t about being overweight. It is the language that we use about ourselves and others when we talk about dieting, losing weight and appearance.

Think before using statements like “I’m so fat.” “I need to lose 10 pounds” and “She’s too fat to be wearing that swimsuit.” Statements that are considered fat talk don’t necessarily have to be negative; they reinforce the need to be thin – like: “You look great! Have you lost weight?” – to read more>
