Flu Season Is Fast Approaching

by Susan Healey, Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit – submitted October 21, 2013

(LEEDS-GRENVILLE) Influenza is a preventable illness that can be very dangerous to some individuals. Because influenza is extremely contagious and is capable of spreading rapidly from person to person, it is important for individuals to follow these steps to protect themselves as well as others in the community: Get a flu shot, wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, keep frequently touched hard surfaces clean and disinfected, cover your cough, and stay home when you are sick. – to read more>

(GANANOQUE, ONTARIO) Jacob Mercer is about ready to admit he’s a fool. Maybe a bit of a heel, a jerk, perhaps even a rogue. But he’s returned to Coley’s Point, Newfoundland, after a whole year away to win back the love of his life and start over in perfect, newfound happiness. At 18 he’s a new man, mature, and ready for anything.

Mary Snow, however, has other plans in mind. She, too, has had a whole year to grow and think. And she thinks she’d really prefer marrying Jerome McKenzie, a rich man’s son and Jacob’s nemesis. After all, he’s reliable, he’s predictable, the future will be so secure with him….

But when the two start sparking under that Salt-Water Moon, surprises are in store for all concerned. – to read more>

Inaction on Municipal Elections Act Reforms Unacceptable: Clark

by Michael Jiggins, Executive Assistant to Steve Clark, MPP, Leeds-Grenville; written October 21, 2013

(QUEEN’S PARK) – Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark is renewing his call for the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing to immediately introduce legislation to amend the Municipal Elections Act.

Clark says the amendments required include eliminating the excessively punitive penalty for the late filing of election expenses by municipal candidates. Currently, being even one day late in submitting this expense report means you automatically lose your council seat and can’t run in the next municipal election. – to read more>

TI Yarnspinners Weaving Tales in New Location

Once upon a ...

Once upon a …

by Lorraine Payette, written October 18, 2013

As the shadows deepen, come. Draw closer to the fire, wrap yourself in the arms of the group, and settle in for an evening of stories. The tellers are rising from the mists, here to enchant, delight, perhaps to frighten you just a little bit, but always to share and have you share with them.

And as the darkness closes around them, the stories will get wilder and wilder. Some will be quiet and intense, others loud and full of life and movement, for each teller is unique. A topic is determined each month, and they come together, eager both to share and to learn from each other.

And, if you’ve a yen, a thought that there’s a story inside you waiting to escape, they invite you to join them and see what you can do. – to read more>

(Kingston, Ontario) What happens when you take two great ideas and put them together? If you’re a beautiful older dog named Clover, the answer is a lot of love and a joyous ending.

Clover couldn’t help what had happened to her. Almost everyone loses something to time, whether they want to or not. A sweet little beige coloured “pocket husky” cross, she had developed various health issues with aging.

But not everyone loses their home over these things. Abandoned by her owners, Clover was found wandering the streets by the Timmins Humane Society (THS). And that was when the miracles started coming together. – to read more>

by Lorraine Payette, written October 13, 2013

(Watertown, NY) As the seasons change, thoughts begin to turn to winter holiday celebrations and gift giving. Even though Halloween isn’t with us yet, many businesses are already gearing up for the gift giving season.

However, not everyone wants the ordinary gifts available with the mass marketers. Sometimes the preferred item is something small and unique, something more personal. Sometimes it isn’t a thing at all, but a service or entertainment. – to read more>

Local Agencies weigh in on “FAT TALK”

Girls Inc. – Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit – October 10, 2013

(LEEDS-GENVILLE, ON) – October 20th – 26th is Fat Talk Free Week. You are invited to take the challenge to end “fat talk” by thinking twice about using statements that are damaging to self-esteem and body image. “Fat talk” isn’t about being overweight. It is the language that we use about ourselves and others when we talk about dieting, losing weight and appearance.

Think before using statements like “I’m so fat.” “I need to lose 10 pounds” and “She’s too fat to be wearing that swimsuit.” Statements that are considered fat talk don’t necessarily have to be negative; they reinforce the need to be thin – like: “You look great! Have you lost weight?” – to read more>
