Flu Season Is Fast Approaching

by Susan Healey, Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit – submitted October 21, 2013

(LEEDS-GRENVILLE) Influenza is a preventable illness that can be very dangerous to some individuals. Because influenza is extremely contagious and is capable of spreading rapidly from person to person, it is important for individuals to follow these steps to protect themselves as well as others in the community: Get a flu shot, wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, keep frequently touched hard surfaces clean and disinfected, cover your cough, and stay home when you are sick. – to read more>

Local Agencies weigh in on “FAT TALK”

Girls Inc. – Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit – October 10, 2013

(LEEDS-GENVILLE, ON) – October 20th – 26th is Fat Talk Free Week. You are invited to take the challenge to end “fat talk” by thinking twice about using statements that are damaging to self-esteem and body image. “Fat talk” isn’t about being overweight. It is the language that we use about ourselves and others when we talk about dieting, losing weight and appearance.

Think before using statements like “I’m so fat.” “I need to lose 10 pounds” and “She’s too fat to be wearing that swimsuit.” Statements that are considered fat talk don’t necessarily have to be negative; they reinforce the need to be thin – like: “You look great! Have you lost weight?” – to read more>

(GANANOQUE, ON) – It’s time to get out the bells and whistles, party hats and streamers. For those who have benefitted to those who will benefit to those who follow the lifestyle and continue to benefit, today is the 118th birthday of chiropractic care.

Harvey Lillard was a janitor working for D. D. Palmer back in 1885. Palmer had noticed that Lillard would not respond to questions unless he had seen the face of the person speaking to him, and quickly learned that Lillard had lost most of his hearing. When questioned, Lillard explained that he had heard a loud popping sound in his neck about ten years previously which then deteriorated into the deafness he now suffered from. – to read more>

Gananoque Man and His Mother Continue to Be Harassed Under Pigeon/Geese By-law

by Lorraine Payette, written August 12, 2013

(GANANOQUE, ONTARIO) John Higgins of Gananoque is completely confused about the workings of Council, By-Law Enforcement and amendments to By-Law No. 2011-74, also known as the “Pigeon/Geese By-Law”. And well he might be.

Higgins lives on River Street in Gananoque with Mary Elizabeth Higgins, his 85-year-old mother. One of their simple joys in life is to watch the small songbirds that gather in their beautifully landscaped yard to partake of the seeds offered by their two tiny birdfeeders, both fastened to a single pole. And they are rewarded by most of the regular callers at such facilities – sparrows, wrens, chickadees, canaries, blue jays, and occasional exotic looking cardinals and downy woodpeckers. He has put fencing along the waterfront behind his property to prevent water birds from coming ashore there and fowling the grounds. – to read more>
